Turning Billboards into Wearable Art
Breathe Magazine, March/April 2005
Ah, the life of a billboard: For a few halcyon months, they hawk the wares of paid advertisers, and then are stripped off their frames and dumped—languishing in landfills. Oh, the humanity.

But all that is about to change: Vy&Elle, a company based in Wisconsin, has been making silk pursers—er, vinyl bags—out of castoff billboards for the past two years. Products range from pocketbooks, messenger-bags, laptop totes, and yoga bags.

The three co-owners are not new to FOMN (friend of Mother Nature) efforts. Designer Nicola Freegard has a background in earth-friendly fabrics for home furnishings. Robin Janson also makes furniture out of salvaged building stuff, like old tin ceilings. And Jeff Janson runs an archictectural salvage company. So they know how to make the old new again in the hippest, prettiest ways.

So far, they've saved more than 12 tons of vinyl from billboards. The result is a line of bags that's constantly surprising (designs are fresh and unpredictable, as they come form whatever billboards they can get), durable and waterproof to boot.
